Ryan C. Fowler, M.D., Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician, joined Coryell Memorial in June of 2016 and is seeing patients in Coryell Medical Clinic, Building 1. He is board certified in Family Medicine with a Certificate of Qualification in Sports Medicine, as well as being board certified by the American Board of Holistic and Integrative Medicine.
Dr. Fowler has significant training in both the treatment and prevention of illness and injury, specializing in the non-operative treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.

Dr. Fowler is a native of West Virginia and entered medical school on a scholarship with the Navy. When asked what inspired him to specialize in Sports Medicine he recalls, “I gravitated towards helping active people get back to doing what they enjoy.” When describing his approach he says, “I start with the philosophy of integrative medicine and its whole-person approach, designed to treat the person, not just the disease. Many factors I take into consideration include lifestyle choices, diet, exercise, stress level, spiritual issues, and weight loss.”

As a Primal Doc member, Dr. Fowler shares the common philosophy that nutrition and movement are the key components in not only treating chronic health problems, but preventing them in the first place. To even further his mission he is also member of the Paleo Physicians Network and a member of Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine.

Common musculoskeletal problems include:
-    Acute injuries (such as ankle sprains, muscle strains, knee and shoulder injuries, and fractures)
-    Overuse injuries (such as rotator cuff and other forms of tendonitis, stress fractures)
-    Medical and injection therapies for osteoarthritis

Common non-musculoskeletal aspects of sports medicine:
-    Concussion
-    Athletes with chronic or acute illness (such as infectious mononucleosis, asthma, or diabetes)
-    Nutrition, supplements, ergogenic acids, and performance issues)
-    Exercise prescription for patients who want to increase their fitness
-    Injury prevention
-    “Return to play” decisions in the sick or injured athlete
-    Recommendations on safe strength training and conditioning exercises
-    Healthy lifestyle promotion

Ultrasound Guided Injection Therapy

Ultrasound guided injections can be used to provide pain relief from conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis, and bursitis. In addition to helping the doctor accurately place the injection, ultrasound guidance can also be used to help the doctor remove fluid from a swollen joint.
Dr. Fowler has advanced training in using ultrasound as a tool to help diagnose and treat a wide range of joint and tendon conditions. This relatively new technology allows the doctor to see inside the joint, including the nerves, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and cartilage. The needle can also be seen on the ultrasound screen as it goes into the skin, helping him place the medication into the injury and inflamed area. Because Dr. Fowler can see exactly where he is placing the injection, the procedure is quick, and often less painful than a blind injection. There is also a lesser likelihood of complications, like nerve damage, from accidental injection into a nerve. The accuracy of the injection is related to longer-lasting pain relief, and that reduction of pain can subsequently help physical therapy to be more effective. Additionally, there can be a cost benefit of ultrasound-guided injections—their accuracy and increased success rate often means that fewer injections are needed to achieve pain relief.

When Dr. Fowler is not seeing patients he enjoys spending time with his wife and three sons. His hobbies include exercising in his home gym, camping, mountain biking and road riding. He is also involved with the men’s group at his church.
