About Stephen Norris, MD

Stephen Norris was raised in Comanche, Texas, graduating from Comanche High in 1967. He played catcher on the baseball team ran the quarter-mile and mile relay in track, started as a guard on the basketball team, and played trumpet in the band. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Baylor University in 1971. He then attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, graduating in 1975. He then did a five-year general surgery residency with the idea of practicing in a small town.

The Norris family has spent the last 40 years in Gatesville, along with their daughter and her family. Dr. Norris was the only surgeon in town until 2016 when Dr. John Bawduniak joined the team. The family has contributed to the town in several ways. Dr. Norris was on the call every night for the first 15 years of his career at Coryell. He was also on the GISD school board for 33 years. All three are active members of the First Baptist Church. Dr. Norris has been on 4 medical missions. One to Ghana, West Africa, and three to Honduras.

Dr. Norris is a member of the American Medical Society, Texas Medical Society, Society of Baylor Surgeons, the Texas Surgical Society, and the American College of Surgeons.  Dr. Norris is certified by the American Board of Surgeons, and although he retired from surgery, he stays busy treating wound care patients. During his off time, Stephen teaches Sunday School, is an avid bicyclist, sings in a gospel quartet, raises topical fish, guineas, geese, and ducks, and flies kites at every free moment.

While Dr. Norris is retired from general surgery, he stays busy treating wound care patients at Coryell Health Advanced Wound Center.
